General questions to light
What should I consider when illuminating a room?
Note the requirements that the luminaires in this room must meet. A different type of lighting may be required in the bedroom than in the kitchen or living room. Depending on what you do in the room, different light is required.
“Layered light” is a tried and tested way of perfectly illuminating a room. Layered light offers perfect illumination of the room and an atmospheric ambience thanks to a harmonious mix of basic, accent and ambient lighting:
- Basic lighting: uniform, very diffuse light that illuminates the entire room
- Accent lighting / zone lighting: brings light to where it is needed; sets accents; creates zones within a room
- Ambient lighting: discreet, warm light; creates atmosphere; sets the scene in the room.
What is Human Centric Lighting?
Human Centric Lighting (HCL) is a lighting concept that aims to improve people’s well-being, health and performance by adapting lighting conditions to their natural biological needs and daily rhythms. Important aspects of Human Centric Lighting:
● Adaptation to the natural day-night rhythm: HCL systems mimic the changes in natural daylight by adjusting the light colour and intensity throughout the day. Cool, energizing light is often used in the morning, while warmer, relaxing light is used in the evening to support the natural sleep-wake rhythm.
● Consideration of biological needs: The light is designed to support people’s biological rhythms, leading to better sleep patterns, increased alertness and improved well-being. This is achieved by adjusting the colour temperature and light intensity.
● Improving productivity and mood: By using HCL, environments can be created that increase productivity and concentration by adapting the lighting conditions to the natural course of the day. It can also help to improve mood and reduce stress.
● Health promotion: HCL systems can help to prevent health problems such as sleep disorders and eye strain by optimally adapting the lighting conditions to people’s circadian rhythms. Flexibility and control: Modern HCL systems often offer the option of adjusting and controlling the light using intelligent systems and sensors that respond to individual needs and preferences.
What do I need to consider when choosing the colour temperature of a luminaire?
The colour temperature describes the colour of the white light from a light source, measured in Kelvin (K), and indicates whether the white light appears warm (yellowish) or cold (bluish). Colour temperature affects human mood, productivity, sleep quality and perception by shaping the atmosphere in a room and influencing people’s biological and psychological well-being.
● Warm white light (< 3300 K): relaxing
Creates a cozy, relaxing atmosphere that is often used in living rooms and restaurants. It can help to reduce stress and promote a relaxed mood. Ideal for relaxing activities in the evening or during leisure time.
● Neutral white light (3400 K – 5000 K): activating, energizing
Promotes a productive and focused environment often used in offices and workspaces. It can improve concentration and alertness by simulating a natural daylight atmosphere.
● Cool white (daylight white) light (> 5000 K): enhances concentration
Has a stimulating effect that can increase alertness and energy. It is often used in areas that require high precision and attention, such as workspaces and laboratories. Can reduce fatigue and increase performance, especially in the morning hours or when working at night.
Which LED colour systems are available?
LEDs can be divided into the following systems:
● Monochrome white: LEDs that produce a specific colour of white light; the colour temperature cannot be varied.
● Multiwhite: LEDs that combine several white LEDs with different colour temperatures (e.g. warm white, neutral white, cool white) to enable a variable light colour and temperature and thus offer a more flexible lighting solution.
● RGB (red, green, blue): LED illuminants that produce a wide range of colours by combining red, green and blue light in variable intensities using additive colour mixing. RGB LEDs can also mix white light.
● RGB monochrome: LED light sources that combine both RGB colour-changing LEDs and white LEDs with a specific colour temperature to enable a comprehensive range of colours and flexible light temperature control. White light is not produced by mixing red, green and blue colours, but by separately controlled white LEDs. The result is a “more perfect” white than is possible by mixing red, green and blue.
● RGB multiwhite: LED light sources that combine both RGB colour-changing LEDs and several white LEDs with different colour temperatures to enable a comprehensive range of colours and flexible light temperature control. White light is not produced by mixing red, green and blue colours, but by separately controlled white LEDs. The result is a more “perfect” shade of white than is possible by mixing red, green and blue.
Please note that integrated systems support monochrome colour systems only. If you opt for a multiwhite, RGB or RGB-multiwhite colour system, you will need a smart system (smart driver & control unit).
Which factors have a significant influence on illuminance?
Illuminance depends on the relationship between the distance from a light source, its beam angle and colour temperature.
● Increasing distance leads to decreasing illuminance.
● A small beam angle produces a focused beam of light with high illuminance, while a wide beam angle produces a wider light cone with less illuminance.
● Although warm white and cool white light can technically have the same illuminance, cool white light mostly seems brighter than warm white light.
What is the difference and the relationship between luminous flux and illuminance?
Luminous flux (lumens, lm) describes the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source. It therefore indicates how much light a lamp produces in total.
–> Lumens = light produced
Illuminance (lux, lx), on the other hand, describes how much of this light actually reaches a specific surface. It therefore indicates the perceived brightness at the point of use.
–> Lux = incident light
There is a direct relationship between both: the higher the luminous flux of a light source, the greater the illuminance that can, in principle, be achieved. However, the actual illuminance also depends on the distance from the light source and on how the light is distributed or focused (see above).
For what purposes are luminaires with a small beam angle suitable?
Luminaires with a small beam angle have a focused light cone and are therefore suitable for accent and object lighting (accentuation of individual areas / objects).
What does TrueColour CRI97+ mean for VoxAura luminaires?
Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is a measure of how naturally and accurately a light source reproduces the colours of objects compared to daylight.
The CRI evaluates the ability of a light source to display the colours of objects authentically and naturally. The scale ranges from 0 to 100, with 100 representing the best colour rendering, comparable to natural sunlight. So CRI 97+ is near to the colour rendering of daylight and so provides you with true colours.
What is the CRI R9 and why it is important to consider?
When it comes to the Colour Rendering Index (CRI), many people focus only on the Ra value. However, this is merely a general indication of colour rendering and says little about how vividly red tones are rendered. This is exactly where CRI R9 comes into play: it measures the rendering of saturated red – one of the most challenging colours for LEDs.
As skin tones, meat products, fruits, textiles, wooden surfaces and high-quality products only appear natural, vibrant and premium when the red tones are rendered authentically, the R9 value is of great importance alongside the Ra. Red tones are rendered well from an R9 value of 70 upwards.
What does the specification L/B mean in the context of LED lighting?
LEDs are subject to a natural age-related reduction in luminous flux (lumen depreciation).
The lifetime of LEDs is specified in hours.
L indicates the percentage of the original luminous flux that is still achieved after the specified lifetime;
B indicates the percentage of LEDs produced that still reach the L limit after the specified lifetime.
Example: L70/B50 > 80,000 h: With an average lifetime of 80,000 hours, at least 50% of the LEDs still provide at least 70% of their original luminous intensity.
Please note that the specified lifetime refers to operation at temperature up to max. +45°C. A higher ambient temperature will shorten the lifetime.
General questions to installation
What must be observed with regard to installation and commissioning?
The applicable national regulations must be observed. Installation and commissioning may only be carried out by a qualified electrician in some cases. The products may only be used for their intended purpose. The instructions in the installation and operating instructions must be observed. LED-ribbons
What shall I do if the required length of an LED strip is greater than the max. visual ribbon length?
An additional driver must be connected in between to ensure a constant voltage supply and thus prevent the brightness from dropping.
Are there LED-ribbons that are particularly suitable for use in caravans or ceiling lighting?
The LS4005 product family features constant current technology. This technology enables a (visual) strip length of up to 15m without a significant drop in luminous flux.<br>
Also suitable for short-term voltage peaks up to 16 V thanks to the integrated IC.
This is why LED strips with constant current technology are ideal for ceiling lighting and lighting in caravans.
What are the advantages of COB LED strips?
COB LED-ribbons are characterized by a wide beam angle of 180° and homogeneous illumination without visible LED dots (without diffusor).
What do I need high-lumen LED-ribbons for?
High-lumen LED-ribbons (e.g., ~1900 lm/m) are useful when you need real working light, not just mood light. They overcome losses from diffusors or indirect mounting, reach 300–750 lx for tasks and “cleaning mode,” and still leave headroom to dim. Ideal for high ceilings, kitchens, workshops, offices, and showrooms where bright, even light is required.
What do I need to consider if I want to install LED-ribbons in wet rooms?
Depending on the distance to possible water sources, the LED-ribbons must be suitable for use in wet rooms. Information on this can be found in the IP protection rating. Please observe the national legal regulations regarding distance to water sources and the required (minimum) IP protection rating. Vox-Aura silicone ribbons have an IP44 protection rating, which is sufficient for many applications in wet rooms. Please note that the driver and the primary lead must be installed in a dry place.
Are there other features that characterize silicone LED strips?
Yes, silicone LED strips are characterized by lateral light emission.
In addition, silicone LED strips can also be installed in waves and circles due to the material properties of silicone, whereby a radius of at least 30 mm must be observed.
What do I need to consider when choosing connectors for LED-ribbons?
VoxAura systems are also harmonized for connectors. As a rule, the width of the PCB of the LED-ribbon needs to be taken into account. In addition it must be noted whether they are suitable for SMD and / or COB LED-ribbons.
Why do LED-ribbons belong in aluminum profiles?
Integrating LED-ribbons in aluminum profiles is the professional solution for durable, high-quality lighting installations. The advantages are:
- Optimal heat dissipation – reduces operating temperature, extends the service life of LED-ribbons and minimizes thermal stress on furniture surfaces.
- Consistent light quality over the entire length – lower thermal load means less brightness drop.
- Protection against dust and dirt – for consistently stable light output.
- Homogeneous light image – a diffuser can only be used in the profile.
- Easy to clean – cover instead of sensitive LED surface.
- Precise guidance & secure fixing – precise integration into furniture.
- Clean finish – technically and visually high-quality solution.
What are recessed and surface mounted profiles particularly suitable for?
Recessed mounted profiles are particularly suitable for lighting furniture. Thanks to this recessed installation method, the profile with the integrated LED-ribbon is concealed within the furniture, leaving only the light visible. Recessed profiles can also be used for installation in ceilings or walls, provided these are suspended ceilings or dry walls.
Surface mounted profiles are particularly suitable for lighting ceilings. This requires a drywall or a suspended ceiling so that the profile can be mounted behind it, ensuring that the profile with its integrated LED-ribbon remains hidden, providing indirect lighting for the ceiling. Using a multiwhite high-lumen LED-ribbon (e.g. LS4050) offers a variety of lighting options: from bright, cool white working light to neutral white ambient lighting and indirect, warm white mood lighting.
Do I have to use a diffusor when I install a LED strip in a profile?
If the LED dots should not be visible, yes.
The diffusors ensures uniform lighting.
It must be noted from how many LEDs /m the LED dots are no longer visible.
Is brightness lost through the use of a diffusor?
This depends on the light transmission of the diffusor.
VoxAura diffusors have a high light transmission of 80 %.
What needs to be considered with regard to the service life of LED lights / LED-ribbons?
The operating temperature has a decisive influence on the service life. The warmer, the shorter the service life.
Why might the luminous flux drop when using LED-ribbons?
With LED strips, there is a drop in luminous flux with increasing strip length, caused by the electrical resistance of the conductor tracks in the LED strip, which can lead to different brightness and colour shades. The specified visual value corresponds to the maximum length of the LED strip before a significant, i.e. perceptible to the human eye, drop in luminous flux occurs.

Mini track light
What is a mini track light?
The mini track light system gives complete freedom to create individual lighting concepts for furniture and interiors. The slim electrified track can be surface mounted or recessed, while adjustable spots can be clipped in anywhere to highlight objects and surfaces. With the option to illuminate the tracks, corner connectors, and perfectly matched components, the system opens up endless possibilities for creative lighting design.
Can I choose between illuminated and non-illuminated tracks?
Yes. A non-illuminated track with a black cover is supplied as standard. However, you can order an additional LED-ribbon and a diffusor to illuminate the track if required.
Can the spots be placed at any position in the track?
Yes. The spots can be clipped in at any position on the track. You only need to pay attention to the cut of the diffusor.
Power supply
Can drivers from other manufacturers be used with VoxAura systems?
No. The components of VoxAura systems are optimally matched to each other. To ensure safety and functionality, only VoxAura components may be connected to each other.
What is the difference and relationship between the power factor and degree of efficiency of a driver?
The power factor indicates how effectively a driver draws power from the electrical grid. It is the ratio of real power to apparent power and ranges from 0 to 1. A higher power factor means less reactive power, lower losses in the electrical distribution system, and more efficient use of the supplied electricity.
The degree of efficiency indicates how effectively a driver converts the electrical power it receives into usable power for the LED load. It is expressed as a percentage and ranges from 0% to 100%. Higher efficiency means less energy is lost as heat and more power is delivered to the LEDs.
The power factor and degree of efficiency are two of the most important indicators of LED driver performance. A high power factor ensures that electricity is drawn efficiently from the grid with minimal reactive power, while a high efficiency ensures that most of the input power is converted into usable power for the LEDs rather than being lost as heat. Together, these factors contribute to lower energy consumption, reduced operating costs, improved system performance, and a more sustainable lighting installation.
What do I need uncontrolled outputs ports for?
Uncontrolled output ports supply continuous current even when the driver is switched off. That is important for connecting luminaires with integrated switches (e.g. PL4001, PL4005, PL4006) so that the light can be switched on automatically when movement is detected. The uncontrolled outputs cannot be controlled via switches or app.
Only the integrated drivers and for smart systems the control units for monochrome lights have an uncontrolled output port, as lights with integrated switches are exclusively monochrome.
Can I operate multiwhite, RGB and RGB-MW LED-ribbons with integrated drivers?
No. This requires smart-driver + control unit to enable control of the light colour and temperature. Only monochrome lights can be controlled with integrated drivers.
What do I need to consider when choosing the driver?
First you need to decide whether an integrated or smart-driver is required to control the light you want. In addition the power of the driver must be matched to the loads that are connected.
Can a smart-driver also be operated without a control unit?
No. The control unit defines the application (incl. colour system) and functions of smart-drivers.
What do I need to consider when selecting control units?
It is important to consider which lighting system is to be controlled, which switches are to be connected and whether the light is to be controlled synchronously or asynchronously.
What does HFD mean for VoxAura drivers?
HFD means High Frequency Driver. This is a completely new technology in the field of LED drivers and enables smallest design as well as significant reduces of operating temperature what leads to increased lifetime.
What is the max. length of connecting cable between the driver and light?
The voltage drops if the cable length is too long and the LEDs no longer shine brightly. Therefore, please observe the maximum cable length from the driver to the light of 6 m.
Switches
What needs to be considered when choosing the switches?
First and foremost, how you want to control the light and if the functions of the switch match with your system.
You also need to consider whether you prefer wireless or wired switches.
Can I extend the signal range of wirelessly controllable devices / lights?
Yes. Direct range from wireless switches to driver /control unit is 6 m. However, the signal is passed from device to device within the Bluetooth mesh and thereby increases the mesh signal range.
Can I switch several integrated drivers and switches together?
Yes. With the help of VoxAura’s multiple switch unit.
The multiple switch unit is used to connect up to three integrated drivers and max. three wired sensor switches to enable mixed control of multiple LED lights. Connected integrated drivers are controlled at the same time by wired sensor switches that can be installed at different places.
Are the lighting scenes that can be activated using the remote controls individually programmable?
With ONE DIAL, lighting scenes can be customized using the VoxAura app.
This is not possible with the BS3001 remote control. With this remote, the lighting scenes are pre-set and cannot be changed.
Accessories
What can I do if the connecting cable is too short or branches are required?
VoxAura also offers accessories such as extension cables and distributors.
Smart Home integration / connected lighting
What are the benefits of connecting lighting to a Smart Home system?
Connected lighting makes everyday life more convenient, energy-efficient, and flexible. Lights can switch on automatically, adapt to different activities & moods, and be controlled individually or as part of a complete lighting scene. The result is greater comfort, lower energy consumption, and a lighting system that can easily adapt to your future needs.
Of course, you don’t need connected lighting, but once you start using it, it makes everyday life easier, and you would not want to be without it.
Which wireless technologies do the VoxAura Smart Home-enabled products support?
The smart VoxAura products feature Bluetooth and Matter / Thread. With the exception of wireless switches and remote controls, which only feature Bluetooth.
Bluetooth offers direct control via VoxAura App or wireless switch / remote — no gateway required. Reliable operation even offline, for effortless and intuitive lighting control at all times.
Matter / Thread enables seamless integration of VoxAura Matter-enabled products into all Matter-enabled Smart Home systems, including Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Amazon Alexa. It is essential to ensure that the matter-enabled Smart Home device being used also functions as a Thread border router (i.e. supports Matter-over-Thread).
What does ‘matter-compatible’ mean in relation to VoxAura products?
It means that those products are matter-certified and therefore compatible with all matter-enabled devices including brands such as Google Home, Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa that support matter. It is essential to ensure that the matter-enabled Smart Home device being used also functions as a Thread border router (i.e. supports Matter-over-Thread) for integrating the matter-compatible VoxAura products in an existing Smart Home system.
What about privacy and data protection if I opt for smart lighting?
Your Smart Home should be yours — not a data farm. That’s why VoxAura doesn’t store or analyze any of your data. Our system runs locally via Thread mesh, ensuring ultra-fast response times with no cloud lack. All servers are located in Germany, fully GDPR-compliant. No personal data storage or third-party tracking.
What are the requirements for Smart Home integration?
To integrate VoxAura Matter-enabled products into an existing Smart Home system, you need a Matter-compatible device that also functions as a Thread border router (Matter-over-Thread). This is precisely where the different generations of many devices differ.
Important: A device being advertised as “Matter-compatible” does not automatically mean that it supports Matter-over-Thread. While many Smart Home devices can act as a Matter controller, only certain models also include Thread border router functionality, which is required to establish communication between the Smart Home system and VoxAura Matter-over-Thread products.
